NIMEI WHITE GOLD RING AUSTRALIAN PEARL AND DIAMONDS

Australian pearls are the largest cultivated pearls in the world among all the cultivated pearls that are marketed. Production areas where such large pearls can be grown are limited, which is why these pearls are extremely rare.

Australian pearls are produced by Pinctada Maxima oysters and are grown between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, mainly in Australia, but also in the Philippines and Indonesia. Most of the crops are spread between the northern coast of Australia and the southern coast of China. These waters are the natural habitat of the large oyster Pinctada Maxima. This oyster grows up to a maximum size of 30 cm in diameter and can be nucleated with much larger grafts than those that are inserted into the Akoya pearl crops.

There are several factors that contribute to the achievement of such large diameters for Australian pearls. A first factor is the size of the Pinctada Maxima oyster, another is the size of the nucleus that is inserted into the nucleation process, and again the time frame, usually several years, that the pearls are left in the oysters, and finally the production area or the environment in which the oysters are grown. The gonads, or reproductive glands, of the Pinctada Maxima oysters are much larger than the gonads of the Akoya oysters, so Pinctada Maxima can secrete the mother-of-pearl around the nucleus much faster than the Akoya oysters, especially in warm water.

The waters of the South Seas are generally very clean and full of plankton, a favorite nutrient of the Pinctada Maxima. Clean and abundant waters greatly favor the production of mother of pearl. The growth period of Australian pearls is longer than that of Akoya, Akoya pearls can be collected as early as 9-16 months, while Australian pearls are harvested after a minimum of two years to be large enough.

Australian pearls have characteristics that make them unique in the world: the satin shine that comes thanks to the rapid secretion of the mother of pearl in the warm waters of the South Seas. Australian pearls have a mild variety of colours, generally white, silver and gold, which are rare colours in other pearl crops.
