Australian pearls are the largest cultivated pearls in the world among all the crop pearls that are marketed. The production areas where you can grow pearls of such large size are limited, for this reason these pearls are extremely rare. 

The Australian pearls are produced by the Oyster Pintarda Maxima and are grown between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, mainly in Australia, but also in the Philippines and Indonesia. Mainly the crops are extended between the northern coast of Australia and the southern coast of China. These waters are the natural habitat of the large oyster Pintarda Maxima. This oyster grows until you have a maximum size of 30 cm in diameter and can be nucleated with much larger grafts to those that are inserted in the crops of the Akoya pearls.

There are several factors that contribute to reaching such large diameters for Australian pearls. A first factor is precisely the dimension of the oyster Pintarda Maxima, another is the size of the nucleus that is inserted in the nucleation process, and still the period of time, usually several years, that the pearls are left in the oysters, and finally the production area or the environment in which the oysters are grown. The gonads, or reproductive glands, of the oysters Pinctada Maxima are much larger than the gonads of the oysters Akoya, and for this reason the pinctada maxima manages to secrete the mother of pearl around the core much more quickly than the Akoya oysters, especially in hot water.

The waters of the South seas are generally very clean and full of plankton, a nourishment preferred by the Maxima pinctada. Clean and abundant waters of food greatly promote mother -of -pearl production. The growth period of the Australian pearls is longer than that of the Akoya, Akoya pearls can already be collected after 9-16 months, while the Australian pearls are collected after a minimum of two years because they are large enough dimensions.

Australian pearls have characteristics that make them unique in the world: the satin luster that comes thanks to the speed of the secretion of the mother of pearl in the warm waters of the South seas. Australian pearls have a slight variety of colors, generally white, silver and golden, which are rare colors in other pearl crops.
