In mineralogy, cordierite (or iolite in gemology) is a mineral, more precisely a cyclosilicate of aluminum, iron and magnesium.
It is known for the very evident pleochroism, that is a change of color depending on the direction from which it is illuminated, so much so that it was called dichroite ("two colors", in ancient Greek). When presented as a gem, with a blue-violet color, it is called "iolite".
Iolite is a gem that, due to its color and particularity, has been able to carve out its share in the gemological market over the years; owes part of its fame to its blue-purplish hue that earned it the nickname "water sapphire"
